All Things Alcott Reading Challenge
All Things Alcott Reading Challenge
After reading The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott by Kelly O’Connor McNees, I have a strong desire for more of Louisa May Alcott.
I want to reread Little Women and Jo’s Boys. I’ve discovered her short stories and learned she has also written adult mysteries and thrillers, poetry, fairy tales, fantasy and even pulp fiction. And then there are the biographies of her, movies of her books. There is a documentary I want to see as well. I also saw that there is a new release coming entitled Little Women and the Werewolves. Ah, I’m not so sure about that one, but there seems to be a lot of interest in Louisa May Alcott lately.
If you accept this challenge, please follow these guidelines:
  • 1. Between May 1st and the end of the year (2010), choose one or more Alcott related things to do (see #2). In the spirit of Louisa May Alcott, each participant will set his/her own course in this challenge. You choose one or as many Alcott related items as you wish.
  • 2. You will also determine the contents of your challenge. As long as it is Alcott related, you may choose books, audiobooks, DVDs, movies, TV shows, a play or live theater. Anything by or about Louisa May Alcott is the intention of the challenge.
  • 3. It’s not necessary to compile a list at the beginning of the challenge. I’m hoping this will lead me to discover new items I haven’t even heard about.
  • 4. It’s perfectly okay if this challenge overlaps with other challenges.

The other thing these books have in common is that they were published under the Putnam imprint Amy Einhorn Books. And that's what this perpetual challenge is all about: reading through the imprint.

Celebrate the Author Challenge
Celebrate the Author Challenge
The challenge is designed to “celebrate” author birthdays. Choose one author for each month of the year. Read at least one book a month. 12 authors. 12 birthdays. If you like, you can read MORE than that. Read the books IN ANY ORDER YOU LIKE. As long as you've got one book representing an author birthday from each month of the year by the end, then you're good.
You can choose picture books, poetry books, early readers, chapter books, fiction for middle grades, fiction for teens, adult reads, nonfiction, whatever you want.
The challenge is designed to ‘celebrate’ the special bond–the connection–that occurs between the author AND the reader as well as the connection between readers. It is very easy to “bond” with other readers over certain works, certain authors, etc.
January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010
Centuries Reading Challenge
Centuries Reading Challenge
Required Books: 3 to 6 Your challenge is to read three (to six) books from at least three different centuries. The challenge is to read books written in different centuries, not just to read books set during different centuries. (If you choose to read more than three books, then you can double up on centuries. You can read as many as you like.) The centuries do not need to be consecutive like the decades challenge. Books can be fiction, nonfiction, poetry, short stories, essays, plays, etc. Books do not have to be a required length. (Though I ask that poetry and short stories be within a larger collection. For example, a book of short stories as opposed to one solitary short story.) Overlaps with other challenges are fine. In fact they're encouraged!!! Audio books are welcome. E-books are welcome as well. What about adaptations and abridged novels? I think you should be able to count at least one towards the challenge. After all, some books are so intimidating that a little extra help is needed. So if you'd rather read an abridged Moby Dick (etc.) then who am I to stop you?!

Cozy Mystery Challenge
Cozy Mystery Challenge
What is a cozy some of you might ask? Good question! To make it brief: a cozy mystery is a mystery that doesn't normally have any rough language, sex scenes, or gruesome details about the killing, and the main character is normally an amateur detective. Many times you will notice that a cozy mystery series also revolves around food or a hobby, although this isn't a requirement. The goal is to read at least 6 cozy mysteries, one for each month. You can choose to read more, but you must read 6 in order to complete this challenge. You don't have to read 1 each month, you can read them whenever you like, you just have to read at least six.
While you can overlap with other challenges, please try to have at least 2 of the books only count towards this challenge.

Daphne du Maurier Reading Challenge
Daphne du Maurier Reading Challenge
This challenge will run from May 13, 2010- April 19, 2011. Why those dates? Daphne du Maurier was born May 13, 1907 and died April 19, 1989. You can of course post reviews before that date.
Now you can decide how you like your du Maurier. I have several categories. You can focus on one form or mix them up.
Here are the categories:
  • Dreaming of Manderley (Novels) Participants in this category will read 3 of Daphne du Maurier's larger works, her novels or non-fiction. You can also count a collection of her short stories as one book.
  • Don't Look Now (Short Stories) Since this are smaller works, readers can choose 6 of her short stories to review.
  • Daphne du Maurier Presents (Film) Although the most well known, Hitchcock was only one director to use du Maurier's work in film. Daphne's IMDb page is quite impressive. Besides The Birds and Rebecca, some of the books that made it to film include Frenchman's Creek and Don't Look Now. Participants in this category will watch 3 films based on du Maurier's work. Often you can rent these for free from your local library. If you happen to have cable or satellite, TCM sometimes plays these films. They post the monthly schedule online. (Not necessary but would be great: a comparison of book and film.)
  • Inspired By... (Other works) This category includes works not written by du Maurier. She used books like Jane Eyre (Rebecca) and Wuthering Heights (Jamaica Inn) to inspire her own writing. Other writers were inspired by du Maurier: Mrs Dewinter by Susan Hill (Fiction) Daphne by Justine Picardie (Fiction) Daphne du Maurier: A Daughter's Memoir by Flavia Leng (Memoir) These are just a few books. There are many others. Participants in this category will read 3 of these works.
  • Dame Daphne (Combination) Maybe you can't decide what to read or want to read a bit of everything. Participants in this category will read or view 3 from the categories above (2 short stories count as 1 book).

EW Summer Books Challenge
EW Summer Books Challenge
"I am a huge fan of the magazine Entertainment Weekly, and I especially enjoy their write-ups on books. When I receive my copy every Friday, the first thing I do flip to their book recommendations and see what they have to say about the new releases. I won't say that I agree with them 100% of the time, but I definitely find myself agreeing more often than not."
Here's EW's list of the summer's must-reads:
  • THIS BODY OF DEATH by Elizabeth George (April 20)
  • HALF LIFE by Roopa Farooki (April 27)
  • GIRL IN TRANSLATION by Jean Kwok (April 29)
  • THE INVISIBLE BRIDGE by Julie Orringer (May 4)
  • THE LAST STAND by Nathaniel Philbrick (May 4)
  • SLOW LOVE: HOW I LOST MY JOB, PUT ON MY PAJAMAS AND FOUND HAPPINESS by Dominique Browning (May 9)
  • WAR by Sebastian Junger (May 11)
  • THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST by Stieg Larsson (May 25)
  • THE PARTICULAR SADNESS OF LEMON CAKE by Aimee Bender (June 1)

  • THE PASSAGE by Justin Cronin (June 8)

  • THE COOKBOOK COLLECTOR by Allegra Goodman (July 6)
  • LUCY by Laurence Gonzales (July 13)

  • I CURSE THE RIVER OF TIME by Per Pettersson (August 3)
  • YOU LOST ME THERE by Rosecrans Baldwin (August 12)
  • MOCKINGJAY by Suzanne Collins (August 24)

Since I want this to be fun and stress-free (just like a summer vacation!), I've decided to include lots of levels, and the first one only challenges you to read one book -- how easy is that? (And I know almost every one of you will be reading MOCKINGJAY before the summer ends.) The names of levels might look familiar to you. Remember those swimming lessons you took at the YMCA when you were a kid? Levels:

  • 4-6 Books: Guppy
  • 7-9 Books: Minnow
  • 10-12 Books: Fish

I know summer doesn't officially start until June, but I figure it's always a good idea to get a jump-start on the fun! To join me in this challenge, all you need to do pick your level of participation (you can always go up levels, but not down.) Then after you read a book, just write a review to share your thoughts with others!

Free Verse Novel Challenge
Free Verse Novel Challenge
Hello, welcome to the Free Verse Novel Challenge! Being fond of this narrative form, I thought, what better way to share my enthusiasm for free verse novels than with a reading challenge! With their increasing popularity, chances are most book lovers are already familiar with these fast paced reads. However, if you have no kids in the house or you're not a big fan of poetry, you just may have missed them. A verse novel is simply one which uses poetry rather than prose to relate the story. Whether you already know and love them or just want to give them a try, I'm hoping we can discover some new titles and great reads together!
Ready to sign up? Here are the details:
  • No blog? No worries! You can post your reviews on Chapters, Amazon, BookCrossing etc. Don't forget to tell your friends though ... ;) !
  • 5 is the magic number needed to complete this challenge A list of books isn't necessary. Crossovers with other challenges are fine (and fun). Each book you complete and review over and above 5 will count as an extra entry.
  • Yes, there will be a prize! On or shortly after December 1st 2010, a draw will be held for a brand new copy of one of my favorite free verse novels, The Crazy Man.
  • Entering the term Free Verse Novels into a web or image search should get you started on possible titles. I'm sure most teachers and librarians would be only too happy to provide you with suggestions.

From ages 9 to 99, there are free verse novels out there for everyone. Let's get out and read them then share our findings together!

The Georgette Heyer Reading Challenge is a perpetual challenge. There is no 'official' start/end date set by the host. (If you want to set your own time limits, you may.) My goal in establishing this challenge is simple: I want to read as many Heyer novels as I can. While Heyer spent some years out of print, each year more and more of her novels are being rereleased for a new generation to enjoy. You may be lucky enough to find Heyer novels at a local used shop or used online. You might find some Heyer novels at your local library. Or you may want to invest in some new copies. Paperbacks are being published by several different companies including Sourcebooks, Inc. and Arrow Books. You can choose to focus on just the Regency romance novels, just the historical novels, or just the mysteries. Whatever you want to read is fine by me. There are no set number of books you'd be required to read. You might want to read six. You might want to read twelve. You might want to read them all. Or you might just want to read two.

It's The End of the World III
Read at least four books about "the end of the world." This includes both apocalyptic fiction and post-apocalyptic fiction. There is quite a bit of overlap with dystopic fiction as well. The point being something--be it coming from within or without, natural or unnatural--has changed civilization, society, humanity to such a degree that it radically differs from "life as we now know it." (Aliens, evil governments, war, plague, natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, hurricanes, depletion of resources, genetic manipulation, etc.)
Books can be classified as children's, young adult, and adult. (Not many children's books go there. But many teen books do. And they're great.)
Graphic novels can count for this challenge.
Audio books allowed. Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.

Once Upon a Time Reading Challenge
Once Upon a Time Reading Challenge
“I felt a curious thrill, as if something had stirred in me, half wakened from sleep. There was something very remote and strange and beautiful behind those words, if I could grasp it, far beyond ancient English.”
~J.R.R. Tolkien, on reading the Cynewulf lines about the star Earendel
What reader hasn’t recognized that “curious thrill” at one time or another? It is the opiate that we so often chase whenever we pick up the next book, that readiness to experience something, to connect on a level deeper than mere ink on the page. That chance for something “remote and strange and beautiful” is what repeatedly draws me back to fantasy, folklore, fairy tale, and mythology. Tales of this ken are built upon foundations of storytelling that date back to our most ancient ancestors. There is just “something” about this kind of story.
For the past four years I have hosted the Once Upon a Time Challenge, an opportunity to band together as a community to celebrate story, in this case the kind that fits roughly under one’s own personal definition of four categories: fantasy, folklore, fairy tale and mythology. As spring rapidly approaches in the Northern Hemisphere, the desire for these stories threatens to overwhelm, and with that, it is time to make the fourth annual Once Upon a Time Challenge official.
Levels:
  • The Journey - no commitment
  • Quest the First -Read at least 5 books that fit somewhere within the Once Upon a Time IV criteria. They might all be fantasy, or folklore, or fairy tales, or mythology…or your five books might be a combination from the four genres.
  • Quest the Second - Read at least one book from each of the four categories. In this quest you will be reading 4 books total: one fantasy, one folklore, one fairy tale, and one mythology.
  • Quest the Third - Fulfill the requirements for Quest the First or Quest the Second AND top it off with a June reading of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream OR a viewing of one of the many theatrical versions of the play.
  • Quest the Fourth - Read two non-fiction books, essay collections, etc. that treat any one or more of the four genres covered in this challenge.
  • Short Story Weekends - This quest involves the reading of one or more short stories that fit within at least one of the four genres during the course of the weekend. Ideally you would post about your short story readings on Sundays or Mondays, but this is not strictly necessary.

For example, if you would like to focus on South Africa because you have an interest in that then you can read all your books from that nation if you want
  • 4. You should go by the country of origin of the author, or the country he/she lives in is fine as well-meaning NOT the country the book is set in!!
  • 5. You don’t have to have a list, that means you can change your mind at any time. As long as there are 8 books you have completed the challenge.
  • 6. Post your reviews in the appropriate continent location as you read along. These can be found by clicking on the images to the right on the dedicated blog.

Rory Gilmore Books Project
Rory Gilmore Books Project
Gilmore Girls was one of my favorite TV series . It was intelligent and funny . Rory Gilmore , made it more enjoyable because she had an obsession for anything literary. Each episode had books( how many TV shows have books ? Not many :) ). Books that she read at home, in school and during travel. Her choice in books was really classy . It included classics , poetry, chick lit, modern literature , mystery , middle grade books , politics and much more. Some of these I have always wanted to read.
After searching a lot on the web I came across this Rory Gilmore Book Club page where all the books ever discussed on the show are listed. I am not sure if this the complete list but , it is a good start. I am turning this into a personal project of reading these books.

South Asian Author Challenge
South Asian Author Challenge
There are two requirements for a book to qualify for the South Asian Author Challenge, both of which must be met:
1) The author must be of South Asian descent. It doesn’t matter if they’re third or fourth generation, or are only half South Asian – I’m pretty flexible on this issue.
2) The book must be about South Asia in some way. It doesn’t have to be set in South Asia, as long as it’s about the culture or history in some way. On the other hand, it can be set in South Asia and not be about South Asians.
Levels:
  • 3 books
  • 5 books
  • 7 books
  • 10 books

Spring into Short Stories Reading Challenge
Spring into Short Stories Reading Challenge
This is the “Spring into Short Stories” challenge. The goal is to read some of those short stories many of us have gathering wool on our shelves or downloaded on our computers, such as the many I personally have saved.
The stories can be included within an anthology or stand alone.
Here are the rules:
1. The story must be less than 50 pages.
2. The story can be any genre.
That’s pretty simple, isn’t it? So, as you can see, there isn’t a lot of work to this challenge.
March 20 - June 20, 2010
Spring Reading Thing Reading Challenge
Spring Reading Thing Reading Challenge
* Create a list of some books you’d like to read or finish this spring.
* Feel free to set some additional reading goals (such as reading to your kids two hours per week, getting through your pile of magazines, etc.). This is completely optional.
* Write a blog post including the list of books you want to read and any additional goals you’ve set, and get ready to post it on your blog on March 20th.
* Visit my blog on March 20th to sign up. I’ll have a Mr. Linky set up that morning, so you can submit a link to your personal Spring Reading Thing post, and it will be added to the master list.
* Read! Work on your goals throughout Spring 2010.
* Report your results. Write another blog post in June to let everyone know how you did.
* Have fun! Visit other participants to see what they’re reading. Write reviews if you’re so inclined. But most of all, enjoy your spring reading.

Stream of Suggestions Reading Challenge
Stream of Suggestions Reading Challenge
I often read nonfiction books in which the author mentions other books that sound interesting, but I rarely seek out those books. So the idea behind the Stream of Suggestions Reading Challenge is to read books based on author suggestions, starting with one book and following the “stream of suggestions” to see where it will take you... Rules:
  • 1. Pick a book to start with (it can be any book, but nonfiction is probably easiest). This can be a book you’ve already read in April.
  • 2. The author of the next book must be mentioned in the previous book, either in the text itself or in the bibliography. (You don’t have to read the book mentioned; you can pick another book by the same author if you want.)
  • 3. If you get stuck (no authors are mentioned or you can’t find their books easily or none of the ones mentioned is of any interest to you), you can go back one or two books and start again with a different author.
  • 4. In my case, I’m going to try to give priority to books I already own or that are available through my library system, but this is optional.
  • 5. You can read as many books as you want (and you don’t need to decide in advance how many books you will read), but you need to read and review at least 4 books to qualify for the giveaway.

Everyone who reads and reviews at least 4 books will qualify for the giveaway. The prize will be the next book on your list, as long as it is available from the Book Depository and is under $20 CAN. (The giveaway is therefore open internationally, as long as the Book Depository will ship to where you live.)

The Guardian Reading Challenge 2.0
There are 3 levels:
1. (This is the same as last year's challenge): Read 10 books. You must read one book from each of the 7 categories. If possible, at least 1 title should be a book you hadn't heard of before seeing it on the list.
2. Read 7 books, one from each category.
3. Read any 5 books from the list.
Every month I'll have a round-up post for you to leave your links. There will probably be prizes of some sort, but I don't have any trips scheduled to England this year (I don't go for 6 years and then went back twice in a year! It was crazy. CRAZY AWESOME.) So they might not be British.

The Marple Poirot Holmes Reading Challenge
The Marple Poirot Holmes Reading Challenge
Nothing really beats a good old Agatha Christie mystery or an Arthur Conan Doyle masterpiece. I've loved Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes all my life and I doubt we'll find a detective surpassing the unexpected genius of Miss Marple, the exemplary 'little grey cells' of the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and of course, the master himself - Sherlock Holmes.
It's been a while since I re-read them all, which lead me to the first challenge I'm hosting - The Marple Poirot Holmes Challenge.
Rules:
  • You will have to read a minimum of 6 books in total: two Miss Marple mysteries, two Sherlock Holmes mysteries and two Hercule Poirot mysteries. You can of course, read more than 6 books if you want to.
  • The books you have chosen for this challenge can overlap with other challenges.

World Party Reading Challenge
World Party Reading Challenge
Welcome to the World Party Reading Challenge, where each month we will celebrate both a US holiday/observance AND a different country. Because what better way to party than with a book. The idea is to read more international literature, but I used US holidays and observances as the inspiration. Some connections might be obvious, others less so.
Details:
  • 1. 12 months, 12 countries, 12 books
  • 2. Each month read one (or more, if you’d like) book either set in, or written by an author from, the featured country (in a few cases Jill has been vague and you just have to stick to the criteria)
  • 3. If you’d like to read a non-fiction book about the country, that works, too. However, Jill asks that you avoid books like Eat, Pray, Love and You Shall Know Our Velocity!, which feature multiple countries. The intent is to try to get a sense of place from your book or author
  • 4. Audio books are allowed
  • 5. Do you have to participate all 12 months? That would be swell, and if you want to consider the challenge completed, then yes, all 12 months are required. However, if you have a burning desire to read a book about Rwanda and only want to participate for that month, You won't be turned away. Party crashers are always welcome
  • 6. A Mr Linky will be posted each month for the reviews about the featured country. Feel free to go back and enter reviews as the year goes on.

Here is the list of US holidays and observances that we will be celebrating with a book from another country:
  • April – April Fool’s Day – France
  • May – May Day – a communist country of your choice, past or present
  • June – Juneteenth – Liberia
  • July – July 4th – Rwanda
  • August – Women’s Equality Day – New Zealand
  • September – Native American Day – any sovereign Native American tribe
  • October – Columbus Day – India
  • November – Thanksgiving – Turkey
  • December – Happy Holidays – choose your own country. It’s my little gift to you.
  • January – Martin Luther King, Jr Day – Cambodia
  • February – Valentine’s Day – England
  • March – Saint Patrick’s Day – Ireland
April 1, 2010 - March 31, 2011

YA Romance Reading Challenge
  • Read six YA romance novels between April 1, 2010 and November 30, 2010.

  • They can be part of a series, or stand-alones.
  • They can be long or short.
  • Audio books are allowed.
  • Some re-reads are allowed, but try to have at least two new-to-you books.
April 1, 2010 and November 30, 2010
Year of the Historicals Reading Challenge
Year of the Historicals Reading Challenge
This will encompass both straight historical fiction and historical romance. I’m hoping this challenge will allow some of us to get back into reading historicals, like me, as well as help us get into some of those books in our TBR piles or maybe to just discover something new. I’ve personally always had a love of history, but I realized that I was drifting away from historical romance too much these last couple of years – and I’ve never read a straight historical! Time to correct that. If you feel the same about your reading trends, follow along. If you already read enough historicals to populate this challenge on your blog, follow along. If you’ve never read historicals, follow along. After all, it’s a challenge.
